Been following our #SMShowdown series focused on using social media within the financial services industry? In this post, we turn our attention to the pharmaceutical industry, where the FDA has issued a number of guidelines for the use of social media.
- Don’t mention product. Use social to focus on events your company sponsors, corporate social responsibility projects or advice and inspiration on living healthy. But stay clear of mentioning specific products, as social is not the right channel for communicating that sort of information.
- Set up searches to listen to all your various products and brand names. You can do this with a hashtag (#).
- Engage whenever possible. If you see someone in your timeline say “Good morning”, respond. There is a human there.
- Create an action plan to deal with complaints. Involve your colleagues in Legal, Compliance and Customer Services to ensure that customer complaints are dealt with in line with company and regulatory requirements.
- Review recent guidance from FDA. The FDA has issued a number of guidelines on the use of social media including character-limited platforms such as Twitter. Find out what the rules mean for your business.
- Ensure your messages are balanced. This means presenting an equal amount of benefit vs risk information in all your social media posts even in channels where there are character limitations (such as Twitter).
- How do you want to use Twitter? With the FDA requiring companies to provide balance in the benefit vs risk information even on social media, you need to evaluate whether a character-limited platform is appropriate to the message that you want to deliver.
